Add Mixamo character with animation to Unreal.

1. Jump over to Mixamo and sign up. Its Adobe -but this is webased and free – you don’t need Adobe CC.
Select the Characters tab at the top to choose a custom character. (You can upload you own see over here)

Mixamo

2. In the Animations tab pick an animation, depending on the character proportion the arms may clip the body – the controls on the right side allow you to tweak this and other settings. When done click DOWNLOAD.

3. In the Download Settings window for the first animation, leave the defaults like this.
This will download the mesh, textures & animation. For subsequent animations for this character, change Skin to Without Skin to download just the animation.

3.1 Naming. In your downloads folder find the first anim you downloaded rename the file to what you want your character to be called (e.g Old_Man_Idle.fbx -> Mouse.fbx). Make a note of the old name because we need this in the next step!

UNREAL

4. In Unreal inside the Content Browser, make a new folder, open it and click the Import button.
Choose the first anim you downloaded (that you renamed in step 3.1) & in the FBX Import Options scroll down to Override Animation Name then enter the name of the anim in my case ‘Old_Man_Idle’. Then Click Import All.

FBX Import Options

I had some errors pop up on import (but I just ignored them! )

5. In the Content Browser window you will see a few new assets. Each icon has a * on it – this means they are not saved. Click Save All. You have uploaded the character mesh, skeleton, textures, materials and the first animaiton.

5. Drag the animation sequence (Icon has dark green underline and has Animation Sequ.. under it) from Content Browser into the 3d Viewport and press the green Play button above the 3D view to see it animate.

6. Now import any other animations you downloaded for this character. It is possible to import several at once. This time in the FBX Import Options dialogue set the Mesh /Skeleton to <YourCharacter_Skeleton> from the drop down list. This will import just the animation(s).

7. With the new animation

With new amination.
