The grass uses a 2-part system. The first part is what you think of when looking at grass in games that use this technique: the planes with a grass texture on them that stick up from the ground. That goes a long way towards making grass cover look convincing.

The overlooked part is the texture that covers the ground. If you look at the four closeups in the middle you’ll be able to clearly see part of the pattern in spots not covered by the grass planes. Changing the color or texture of this bottom layer greatly effects the overall feel of the terrain.
